Granting parking lot opens Kalispell Ave. to downtown
Last week’s edition of the Whitefish Pilot featured coverage of the Whitefish Planning Board’s unanimous denial, at its July 19 meeting, of a request of the Firebrand Hotel for a rezoning of 224 Kalispell Avenue from WR-4 to WB-3/SC. This decision was purely advisory and the City Council has the power to do just the opposite. I am writing to inform Whitefish citizens of the effect that a rezoning of this property would have not only on Kalispell Avenue, but also the neighborhood and the town itself. This is not just about one lot. I encourage citizens of Whitefish to attend the City Council meeting on Aug. 6 at 7:10 p.m. to make their views known.
Rosendale's legislative record is self-serving
Matt Rosendale, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat in Montana, is not very well known to many Montanans. However, he fortunately has a record in the Montana Legislature which voters should understand. Here are some of the bills which Mr. Rosendale, a land developer, sponsored in the 2011, 2013, and 2015 legislative sessions. Granted, Mr. Rosendale introduced other bills in each legislative session, however his sponsoring self-serving bills to limit land use regulations and assist the development community should give voters pause and concern.

Weed Watch: Houndstongue
Ever have little cockle-burrs cluster on your clothes or fill up your dog’s tail? These nutlets are from houndstongue (cynoglossum officinale), a member of the borage family. Introduced from Europe, this plant is poisonous to wildlife and livestock. The first year’s growth is a rosette on the ground of velvety-looking leaves that are actually rough to the touch. The following June the plant will grow up to 4 feet and produce clusters of reddish-purplish flowers on the branch ends. The best way to control it is to pull it. After a good rain, put on some gloves, grab a bucket and a shovel, and do a houndstongue patrol on your property. Non-native plants are designated as weeds when their presence is harmful to other plants and animals. To learn more, visit mtweed.org.
