Member/Guest registration forms for the member/guest tournament are available in the Golf Shop for the Aug. 25-26 event. Once again the first day will be a two-person net best ball format and the second day will be a modified Stapleford scoring event. In the Stapleford format each player is given a target score based on their handicap so the lower the handicap the larger number of points relative to par that player must achieve. Senior players will be playing from the “gold” tees provided their age and handicap total more than 80, so if you are 75 and a five or more handicap you can play the forward tees. The last day all teams are eligible to purchase their team in a bet that they will be one of the lower scores for day two. Call the Golf Shop at 862-5960 for more details and to register.

Proper irrigation

When the weather consists of prolonged hot dry periods just throwing more water is not the easy answer. It is very easy to over irrigate and make the turf highly susceptible to diseases that like a hot and moist environment. The staff does the watering in the evenings to avoid conflicts with player during the day, but during the hot dog days of summer they even have to come back in the afternoons to apply more water in areas that show stress. Our irrigation system, while one of the more modern set-ups, is still limited in that not all areas are designed to have overlapping sprinkler heads, so if you run the water too long you get some areas that are then too wet. Basically if you watched the British Open you noticed that golf can be played on brown and not all green conditions. Our staff uses sensors with probes to measure the water content on the greens and then will hand water areas that test low for necessary moisture levels. We chart the greens so we know where most of the areas are that need extra irrigation and will set the cycles appropriately.

Junior Golf Fun Day, July 25

The annual Gary Norby Junior Golf program celebrates this Wednesday by having all the participants gather for various levels of fun competition and to receive recognition for their involvement in the program. Our dedicated staff deserves a huge thank you for organizing and operating one of the best junior golf programs in the country.

The gap remains the same

A good fundamental to remember is that the gap between your body and hands as you hold the club remains the same for all your clubs. If you reach for the ball with your driver you set yourself up for a flat swing with a good chance to hook the ball. Always let your hands and arms drop naturally from your shoulders, as this is where they will return naturally as you swing. Be natural and let your hands and arms swing freely. A lighter grip is always better than a death grip for swing consistency and accuracy.
