Teachers, school board trustees and friends of the Whitefish School District gathered Monday afternoon to break ground on the construction of a new $26.5 million Muldown Elementary School.

“We are excited to begin construction on the new Muldown Elementary School and appreciate the support of the Whitefish community to help make this historic project happen,” said Heather Davis Schmidt, superintendent of Whitefish School District. “Our youngest students and our staff will benefit from the new high quality learning environment — one that is safe, healthy, and provides opportunities for meaningful learning.”

The school will sit adjacent to Whitefish High School on the corner of Pine Avenue and Seventh Street. Construction work is set to begin in earnest on July 18. Voters last October approved a $26.5 million bond to build the new elementary school and address critical upgrades needed at the current aging school. The new school will be able to accommodate up to 800 students in kindergarten through fourth-grade and is scheduled to open for the 2020 school year.
