Legendary golfer Byron Nelson made a trip to Whitefish, visiting the Iron Horse and Whitefish Lake Golf Clubs and vacationing around town. Nelson’s outstanding career paved the way for later greats like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

July 27, 1988

The waters of Whitefish Lake got quite a scare after an oil spray truck overturned onto the dock of a lakeshore home. A tanker was applying a dust coat to Birch Point Drive when the vehicle tipped.

July 27, 1978

A 100-unit motel was in the works to replace the Bay Point cabins near the lake. The cost for the project was $2.8 million and would involve tearing down 14 cabins built several decades before.

50 years ago

July 25, 1968

A string of counterfeit $20 bills were circulating through the Flathead. Authorities were pursuing a suspect in Kalispell they believed was behind the fraud.
