Legislative heaven in an interim committee

The process can take a toll on legislators. Some of my Republican colleagues believe they have been left out of decisions by the executive branch and lament about the high number of vetoes by Governor Bullock. Some of my Democratic brethren believe the budget process ultimately decided by Republicans failed to consider new revenues to avoid substantial cuts to balance the budget. Now in the aftermath of deep cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services, some Democrats want a supplemental budget (borrow from 2019 for 2018), to stop the bleeding. Such a proposal will not happen because the new budget, established following a short special session in November, was intentional; planned and approved by the two bodies, Senate and House of Representative. Thus, the prevailing cuts do not meet the statutory definition of “emergency,” eliminating any thought of a supplemental budget.

Applause for student movement

This student walkout is the most courageous and prophetic act of civil engagement in America since the student civil rights movement of the 1960s. Like then, young people are doing what their parents, teachers and other responsible adults have failed to — they are putting their bodies on the side of peace and justice and taking a stand against the heightening degree of uncontrolled violence in schools, churches and other public settings where youth gather. Attempting to punish students for exercising their constitutional rights in defense of their own health and that of the public health and general welfare of their community is not only stupid but wrong as history has shown time and again. I deeply applaud and admire the youth who choose to participate and the adults and businesses who seize upon this historic memorial to honor those murdered across our country.

Supports Smith

Concerning Emery Smith who is running for re-election as a trustee for Flathead Electric, Emery is highly qualified to serve in this capacity. He has been serving as a trustee for 15 years and has attended many schools and seminars about electric utility operation. It would be a tragedy for the membership if they were to lose Emery’s service on this board. He stands behind a strong moral compass and is not afraid to make his voice heard in the board room. I served with him on this board for many years and can say without reservation he is the man for this job. Please continue to support him and the lower rates he has made available to the membership through conservation and efficiency. No one can replace his years of dedicated service.

Gun control is not the answer to school safety

In response to Whitefish Superintendent Heather Davis Schmidt’s recent column, in which she uses her position as a platform for her beliefs, I want to take this opportunity to offer a more realistic view. She doesn’t want to debate the Second Amendment in the modern era. Neither do I; I want to make sure that my kids are safe. But you can’t stick your head in the sand and refuse to debate it in hopes that the problem will go away. In my opinion, our government, which includes our public education system, caused the problem, and they’re too stubborn and arrogant to solve it. Schmidt mentions that we need to address the culture they’ve created in our schools. Let me be the first to say an enthusiastic “Amen!”
