Celebrating public education

| March 13, 2018 1:06 PM

Public Schools Week is a chance to celebrate the success of our public schools and to reemphasize our passion for public education. Our public schools are the foundation of a good democracy, creating modern careers and responsible citizens. The education our students receive in Whitefish Schools is the best way to ensure they will be ready to thrive in the future as our world changes at a breathtaking pace.

With the support of the Whitefish community, we are helping students succeed in continuous learning, career, and citizenship. We continue to be recognized on a national level for our efforts in sustainability, and we continue to create curriculum where students have hands-on experiences that build upon one another from grade level to grade level.

We continue to strengthen learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), creating more opportunities in advanced placement, and adding additional support for writing skills that is critical to career and college readiness. From coding, robotics, engineering, and design, to computer science, music, and art, the learning experiences in our schools allow students to apply what they learn in the classroom to the world beyond.

I encourage you to look at our new publication called “A Look Inside Whitefish Schools — The Foundation for Tomorrow.” It details our project-based model where our students are learning beyond textbooks. You can find the publication on our website, as well as the print version at school offices and other locations around town.

The good work we are doing is not possible without your support. Thank you for joining with us and celebrating Public Schools Week. Our Whitefish community is stronger and our public schools are better because of the work we do together.

Heather Davis Schmidt is the Superintendent of the Whitefish School District.
