Relay raises more than $28,000
The local Relay for Life chapter raised $28,631 at the June 18-19 walkathon at the Whitefish High School practice field. An individual from the North Valley Hospital team walked from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., while three of the 18 teams had a member on the track at all times, including the Whitefish Fire Department, Whitefish Lake Golf Club and North Valley Hospital.

James Michael Collins
James Michael (Mike) Collins, 61, passed away at his home in Evergreen on May 15, 2010. He was born on April 2, 1949, in Spokane, Wash. The family moved to Columbia Falls where he attended school and graduated in 1967. He attended FVCC focusing on forestry. In 1969, Mike joined the Army National Guard, where he attended Officers Candidate School and later became a captain. He was highly recognized for his excellence in leadership, selflessness, and dedication to his unit, and received numerous prestigious commendations. His peers and superiors described Mike as a "diamond among many gems". He retired from the National Guard in 1993 after 34 years of service. During his service with the Guard, he also worked for the Forest Service and the Department of State Lands for several years, after which he went to work for Semitool for many years, until April of 2007.

He was highly recognized for his excellence in leadership, selflessness, and dedication to his unit, and received numerous prestigious commendations. His peers and superiors described Mike as a "diamond among many gems". He retired from the National Guard in 1993 after 34 years of service. During his service with the Guard, he also worked for the Forest Service and the Department of State Lands for several years, after which he went to work for Semitool for many years, until April of 2007.

Whitewater Festival brings paddlers to Wild Mile
The 34th annual Whitewater Festival returned to its usual tradition of taking place in the rain last weekend after a fluke sunny Memorial Day weekend last year, but that didn't keep people from throwing on their ran gear and watching the races, which had more than double the number of competitors participate than last year.

The Boys and Girls Club holds a Youth Night on Thursdays at Glacier Discovery Square. It’s a safe and fun place for youth to hang out. Middle school kids are welcome from 5 to 7 p.m. and high school age from 7 to 9 p.m. There is no cost.
DUI school
During the week of May 3-7, Whitefish High School hosted the first ever drunk driving awareness week. Each day involved different activities to show the dangers of drinking and driving. This was a very involved week, with many people to thank for the success of the week.
