Whitefish Theatre Company presents a Black Curtain production of Jen Silverman’s exceedingly smart modern fable, “Witch.”

Called “both hilarious and startlingly honest,” mischief is afoot in the sleepy village of Edmonton and the fate of the world is at stake. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 and 21 at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.

In one of the oldest storylines around, Scratch, a slick, young devil dressed as a junior salesman, arrives in search of people’s souls in exchange for their deepest desires. Elizabeth should be his easiest target, having been labeled the witch of Edmonton and cast out by the town, but her soul is not so readily bought. As the citizens begin to take advantage of the Devil’s deals, outcast Elizabeth stuns the handsome, self-centered Scratch by standing her ground. This sharp, inventive, and fiendishly funny new play debates how much our souls are worth when hope is hard to come by.

“Jen Silverman’s ‘Witch’ is an evocative story of love, power, and change,” director Justin Ghostlight said. “Each character we meet is on a journey of their own, complete with valleys of introspection and peaks of actualization. The story includes the powerful, the meek, the ambitious, and the downtrodden together wrapped in a helix of momentum circling the devil himself.”

“Witch’ is a comedy that will take you through a socio-political ringer and leave you asking, ‘Is humanity capable of saving itself? And should it?’” he added.

Cast members include Merannda Button as Elizebeth, Andrew Matulionis as Scratch, Christopher DeJohn as Cuddy, Scotty MacLaren as Sir Arthur, Adam Robinson as Frank and Stephanie Miller as Winifred.

This is a Black Curtain production, which means there will be minimal staging, sets and props. Actors will read from scripts.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets may be purchased online at www.whitefishtheatreco.org, at the box office located at First Central Avenue in Whitefish, or by calling 862-5371. Box office hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before a performance.
