The Whitefish boys continued surging, winning its third straight with a 64-60 victory over Polson in Northwest A basketball conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Carson Gulick led the Bulldogs with an impressive 29 points.

“It’s huge to have players that can go off on any given night. As long as we play as a team, we will be fine,” Whitefish Head Coach Alex Gonzalez said.

Polson was coming off a 61-point outburst against Browning on January 5, and the offensive output continued for both teams. Polson led 31-30 at halftime. Then the Bulldogs went on a 19-12 run in the third quarter, and the Pirates couldn't quite close the gap in the fourth quarter.

Mason Genovese and Carson Krack scored eight points, while CJ Thew added six.

“We harp on the little things that are the big things,” Gonzalez said. “I felt Scotty Dalen gave us huge minutes when Carson Krack got in foul trouble. I also felt Mason Genovese hit a crucial three in the fourth quarter. Having CJ Thew running the point is also big, he’s the floor general. Although Mason Kelch hasn’t been shooting like we want, he makes everyone better on the court.”

Polson fell to 1-8 on the year, while Whitefish kept pace with Browning in overall records at 5-2 and 1-0 in conference play. Whitefish is averaging nearly 57 points per game, while it's allowing 52 points per game.

Browning averages 71 points per game but also allows 64 points per game. Ronan, which is leading the Northwest A conference at the moment with a 2-0 conference record and has also won three straight.

“Winning builds confidence, but it’s important that we just take it one game at a time,” Gonzalez said. “In my opinion, our conference is very unpredictable, and anyone can beat anyone on any given night. We must prepare and take everyone seriously despite records. We approach every game differently, for example Coach Henderson saw some flaws in our defense we have been tweaking some things there.”
