The county commissioners went on record as favoring the development of a work plan for the proposed Whitefish Lake Watershed, according to a letter read at the City Council meeting. The letter was a copy of one sent by the commissioners to the Soil Conservation Service in Bozeman and suggested that a meeting involving the steering committee be held explaining gate control, flooding aspects and downstream water needs. The commissioners felt that the project should either be activated or dropped and that they would cooperate in any possible way to facilitate activation.

Whitefish City Council voted unanimously to adopt a sign ordinance. The new law regulated the size, location and number of signs of business could have and how they would be lighted, prohibited or signs that move blank and have exposed. Neon or our portable? The ordinance had been discussed informally and officially off and on for years.

Campaign finance reports filed by candidates for the Nov. 8 election showed that spending big bucks was effective and television or radio spots were especially persuasive. According to the reports, one of the hardest fought races in the country, district judge, was no contest when it came to spending. Katherine “Kitty” Curtis outspent incumbent Michael Keedy almost two to one. The finance reports show Curtis spent $36,083 to be elected to a job which paid $63,178 per year.

The real estate plan released by the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation would not affect the Whitefish School Trust Lands Neighborhood Plan, according to department officials. David Greer, the DNRC’s statewide land use planner said that the DNRC will ask the state land board to approve alternative “D” of the plan. That alternative, according to Greer, heavily weighed public input on the decision to develop state lands. The plan states “... the philosophy of “D” is to focus more on improving land entitlements to maximize income to the trusts and comply with local, state and federal regulations.”

Whitefish Mountain Resort was poised to have a solid opening day for its 67th season after more than three feet of snow blanketed the resort in November. Nearly 12 inches of snow fell on Big Mountain last weekend, upping the settled base at the summit to 43 inches with more snow in the forecast. About a foot of snow had accumulated at the resort's base area. The depth was enough to cover most of the lower slopes, but the tops of beargrass and other shrubs and some mountain bike trails were still apparent. “We are optimistic that we'll have top-to-bottom skiing via Russ's Street, however the rest of the front side, along with the Chair 2 area is one good storm away from being skiable,” resort spokesperson Riley Polumbus said.
