There were 10 incidents of indecent exposure reported to Whitefish Police. Johnny R. Dennison, 34, of Whitefish, was convicted in City Court for indecent exposure at City Beach. Another man was charged with indecent exposure, but his case had not been brought to trial. Kevin S Nelson, 19, also of Whitefish, was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary. Voelker said in each case, the suspects had done “their homework” and had not selected victims randomly. Each woman, he said, was single or divorced, lived alone, was 30 years old or younger and attractive.

Whitefish volunteers were on track to have their biggest year ever. Fire calls for the first 8 months of 1994 were more than all in 1993. Thus far in 1994, firefighters had responded to more than 160 calls. During all of last year the fire department responded to just 159 calls. “We surpassed what we did all last year last week,” said Whitefish Fire Chief Dave Sipe. “There're new calls we have not even recorded yet.” With more than four months to go, Sipe said total calls could be up 20% or more and fire calls could be more than 200 by years end.

Super 1 Foods would break ground on a new grocery store in Whitefish on the site where the Food Pavilion and former Sprouse-Reitz development store stood. The new Whitefish store would be about 6,000 square feet larger than the Super 1 store that opened a year ago in Columbia Falls. Super 1 is also completing an in-store remodel of its 55,000-square-foot Kalispell store. “The newer, contemporary design of the Whitefish store, with high ceilings, will make it seem larger than the Kalispell store,” said Mike Winger, vice president of store development for United Retail Merchants.

Whitefish resort tax collections for fiscal year 2014 reached record setting levels. From July 2013 through June 2014, $2.09 million was collected. It was the first time collections from the 2% tax on restaurants and bars, retail, and lodging had topped the $2 million dollar mark in a fiscal year. For the year collections were up about 5% over last year. Comparatively, fiscal year 2013 saw growth of about 10% over the prior year.
