An open letter to the ATP kids

| August 21, 2024 12:00 AM

When Betsi, David Ackroyd, and I started Alpine Theatre Project, it was because we saw the opportunity to match our skills with our love for the area and our desire to stay in the Valley. In that way, I guess you could say it was self-serving. Over 20 years, we were able to introduce the Valley to some of the most accomplished theatre artists in the country. In turn, we were able to introduce those artists to the Valley. We could have left it at that, and I’d like to think it would have been enough.

But the universe doesn't work that way. It doesn’t care where you think you’re going. Sometimes, the smartest thing you can do is listen to it when it speaks and try to go with it. In 2008, it spoke to us when 120 kids showed up to audition for The Jungle Book. And when Betsi turned to me that afternoon and said, “You know we’re keeping all of them, right?” it was clear she was listening. What else can you do but hold on and try to keep up?

After 16 years and over 3,000 students, I can confidently say that you - the ATP Kids - were the greatest part of what we built together.

We always thought the purpose of the ATP Kids program was to inspire you. The truth is, it was you who inspired us. Over 16 years, we watched you grow as performers and as people. We watched how theatre gave you a chance to release the storms and sunshine within you - just as it gave us. We watched as so many of you found a place of refuge, of sanctuary, and a place to explore who you are and who you aspire to be - together.

That’s what theatre has given so many of us. And over the years, we’ve seen so many of you use that same tool to tap into that maelstrom of humanity within you and in doing so, understand yourselves and each other a little better.

Teaching you has reminded us all of why we got into theatre in the first place, and we are so grateful for that gift.

Lately, it’s become clear to Betsi and me that we need to listen to the Universe once again, and go with what feels right for ourselves, our marriage, and our family. The decision to move on from ATP and pass the torch to new leaders was not made lightly - mainly because the ATP Kids program - and all of you - have become so dear to us. We have no doubt that Tracy & Cynthia, ATP’s new leaders, share our passion for ATP’s mission and that it all is in good hands.

But we can’t move on without thanking you first.

Thank you and your families for putting your faith and trust in us. Thank you for giving us the chance to share this art with you. And mostly, thank you for inspiring us and reminding us how wonderful it is to be Theatre Kids. We Love You.
