Kelsey Evans named new Pilot Editor

| April 24, 2024 12:00 PM

Kelsey Evans has joined the Whitefish Pilot as its new editor.

Evans comes to the Flathead Valley after serving as editor for the University of Idaho College of Natural Resources in Moscow, Idaho.

"We're pleased to bring Kelsey on board to lead Whitefish's award-winning local newspaper,” said Matt Baldwin, regional editor for Hagadone Media Montana. “Kelsey has a strong sense of community journalism, and is eager to learn more about Whitefish and the folks who call this special place home.”

Evans has a comprehensive background in communications, with experience as an English professor, sustainability officer, and as a marketing and development assistant. She holds a master’s degree in English from the University of Idaho and a bachelor’s in English and creative writing, and environmental studies from Rice University in Houston.

“It is an honor to serve the Whitefish community,” Evans said. “From the people to the land, it is a beloved place that deserves extraordinary journalism. As editor, I will amplify the voices and stories that matter most to Whitefish.”

According to Evans, community journalism is important for Whitefish now more than ever.

“The stories we tell uphold our history and build our future. As editor, I will help us stay true to what makes Whitefish unique while helping us evolve,” Evans said.

When she’s not writing and editing, Evans enjoys running, swimming, coming up with nonsensical poetry and listening to audiobooks.

Evans welcomes community members to stop by the Pilot office to share story ideas or to just chat about community happenings.

“I have a door-always-open mentality,” Evans said. “Unless I’m on a hike. Then, you should just email me or leave a voicemail.”

Evans is teaming up with reporter Julie Engler and advertising director Morgan Cawdrey to round out the Pilot staff.

“I’m grateful for Julie’s exceptional efforts over the last few months while the Pilot searched for its next editor,” said Baldwin. “She's done a remarkable job covering all aspects of the community and keeping our readers informed. It’s a great feeling to know that the Pilot is well positioned for the future with Kelsey, Julie and Morgan leading the way.”

The Pilot plans to host an open house at a later date this spring.
