Stump Town Follies began with an old-fashioned band concert in Depot Park and ended with a pancake breakfast and horse show. Plans included merchants on Central Avenue using the space on the sidewalks in front of their stores for sales and displays. The street was blocked off between Railway and Fourth Streets and additional displays were placed in the streets. An art auction at the Orpheum Theater was planned. The U.S. Army sent a precision drill team from Ft. Carson in Wyoming to perform. Girl Scouts from Whitefish planned a camping display with information on camping facilities in the area. 4-H groups and the Cowbells joined forces for a display and the Jaycees cooked and served a bar-b-que meal.

By a unanimous vote, the Whitefish City Council agreed to offer Jack Arnold the job of city manager. After the vote, Mayor Jim Putnam called Arnold at his home in Ishpeming, Michigan, and he tentatively accepted the job. He asked the council to send him the details of his contract in writing. What the council offered Arnold was a $30,000 salary (he was currently making $32,500 as city manager of Ishpeming) with a review after six months; pay half of his moving expenses up to a maximum of $2,000, and use of a car for city business.

An idea that was formed in the mind of one Whitefish resident in November, 1992, came to light with the display of the NAMES Project Memorial Quilt at the Whitefish High School gymnasium.  Steve Mannsted had returned to his hometown in North Dakota to visit his grandfather, who only had only four months to live. On the way back, he stopped in Billings for the night and discovered the AIDS Memorial Quilt was being displayed that weekend. “I came upon a 12-foot by 12-foot section of panels that were all for one person,” said Hammsted. “Every panel was made by a member of his family. I just broke down and cried.”

Drug busts at Flathead High School revealed marijuana distribution networks that operated in the open at school. While Whitefish High School was not the subject of any arrests, results of the 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Summary showed the problem of drugs at Whitefish High School was pervasive. The study revealed roughly 34.5% of high-school students were current users of marijuana, and 50% were current users of alcohol. Current use was defined as one or more times in the previous 30 days.

Colorful, opinionated and outspoken – longtime Whitefish physician David Kauffman was known simply as “Doc” around town. For many Whitefish natives, there was a good chance Kauffman was the doctor at their birth, the minister at their marriage or a companion on a horse packing trip. “Doc birthed, married and bruised about two-thirds of my family,” said Margy Juenke. “He was more than a doctor, he was a pioneer in many areas and cared about everyone he met.”
