The rustlers were cut off at the pass by the Whitefish Police Department and the Flathead County Sheriff’s office when three men were arrested with the carcasses of a hog and a whiteface heifer in their panel truck. Their truck was spotted by Ralph P. Saunders after he heard a shot that missed one of his hogs. All police departments were alerted and the truck got tangled up in the dead-end roads in the vicinity of Engineer’s Row west of Whitefish. The men were apprehended and J.P. Jim Newman issued a search warrant to enter the truck where the carcasses were found along with guns and skinning knives. The trio were arraigned and bail was set at $10,000.

The proposed Big Mountain Road through Haskill Basin was to be the topic of a town meeting at the Whitefish City Hall. In a letter to citizens and community groups, inviting them to the meeting, Mayor Hank Olson wrote, “A proposal is still being considered to develop a bypass road to Big Mountain through Haskill Basin. Many people are concerned about this proposal for various reasons, several of which are outlined in the attached issue paper.“ Interest in a new route to Big Mountain was raised at a meeting in October between Kalispell residents and Flathead County Commissioner Mel Wollan.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requested the owners of the Whitefish Lake Lodge find alternatives to their original proposal to fill in nearly four acres of wetlands on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue. Nearly 50 agencies and individuals expressed concern or voiced opposition to the proposal, prompting the corps to consider a public hearing. Larry Robson, environmental resource specialist with the corps, said the agency is waiting for the applicant, P & D and Enterprises of Bigfork, to come back with alternatives to its original plan.

People from as far as Kila and as nearby as Kalispell and Columbia Falls attended the meeting.

Whitefish Mountain Resort was named one of the least eco-friendly ski resorts in the nation in an annual report published by the nonprofit Ski Area Citizens Coalition. Whitefish ranked 84th out of 85 ski areas for their commitment to environmental stewardship. The poor result, however, was likely due to the fact that resort officials did not fill out the SSACC survey. According to Whitefish Mountain Resort, the NSAA recommended not filling out the survey because they believed its objectivity was questionable.
