Event marks release of novel about 1970s rock tours

A launch party for author Glenn Schiffman’s autobiographical fiction novel titled "Life in the Fast Lane: Truckin' on the 1970s Rock & Roll Road” is Friday, Nov. 10. 

Starting at 5 p.m., this free community event is hosted by Slow Burn Records in Whitefish. Schiffman will read some short chapters from his book, share his own true stories, and answer questions about writing the book and his personal 1970s rock tour experiences.

In the 1970s he worked full-time as a sound equipment truck driver and rigger, touring with more than 40 top-grossing bands, including Led Zeppelin, Elvis, Linda Ronstadt, Loggins and Messina, and the Rolling Stones.

Even though "much of it is mostly true," Schiffman insists his novel is not a memoir. "The 1970s Rock 'n' Roll Road is paved with myths and legends. Some of them are mine... If I didn't get the sound gear to a gig on time, the show could not go on." 

Readers say his book dives deeper than roadie anecdote "tell-alls" and rock star biographies dare to go.

Schiffman first autobiographical fiction book, "The Way I Was Taught," was a 2015 Eric Hoffer Award finalist. It was inspired by his childhood experiences with Native American elders while growing up near the Iroquois reservation in upstate New York.

His short stories and personal essays have been published in print and online journals. Schiffman has also taught autobiographical fiction and personal essay writing for Flathead Valley Community College's Continuing Education programs.

Signed books will be available for purchase at a special launch discount. Refreshments will be provided.
