Delays expected on Spokane Ave as city completes water main replacement
With phase one completed in the fall, phase two of the Spokane Avenue Water Main Replacement Project was scheduled to begin Monday, March 20.
The City of Whitefish is working on replacing a decaying water main pipe that runs under Spokane Avenue. The project includes the replacement of approximately 4,500 feet of six-inch old cast iron water main with new 18-inch PVC water main. After the completion of the pipe replacement, the Montana Department of Transportation is scheduled to repave the road.
For phase two, East Fifth Street and East Sixth Street will be closed until further notice between Spokane Avenue and Kalispell Avenue for construction during the Spokane Avenue Water Main Replacement Project.
Construction will begin at Sixth Street and continue north to East Second Street and will feature single-lane traffic with flaggers from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every weekday.
The public should expect reduced speed limits, flaggers and delays. Delays are expected to be the most severe in the morning and afternoon during school drop-off and pick-up.
Roadway access will be maintained to properties within the closure, but travelers are encouraged to adjust their routes and travel times accordingly.
The anticipated date of completion of this phase of the project is June 6, 2023.
Immediately following the completion of phase two, the Montana Department of Transportation’s Repaving Project will begin.
The city says it appreciates the cooperation and patience of the Whitefish community in adhering to all signage and flaggers while work is done to improve the Whitefish water system and roadway.
