The kickoff day for the annual Whitefish Library Summer Reading Program for kids and adults is Monday, June 12. Along with the traditional Reading Challenge, there will be weekly activities and programs. Some will be familiar, some new, but all are expected to be exciting and fun.

All readers are encouraged to pick up a reading log from the library starting June 12, and log time spent reading. As the logs get filled out, return them to the library for a ticket that will make you eligible to win one of our many prizes.

Each year the challenge has a nonprofit partner. For each ticket that readers earn, $1 is pledged as a donation to the partner nonprofit, sponsored by local financial institutions. Readers earned over $1,500 for Whitefish Lake Institute last year. This year’s nonprofit is Good Grief Camp, and sponsors include American Bank, Glacier Bank and Whitefish Credit Union.

“I am excited to see the Whitefish community come together for summer fun and activities, working together to help Good Grief Camp,” said Youth Services Librarian Gina Schiff, “All while encouraging the love of reading!”

Good Grief Camp offers a week-long summer camp for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one with children in similar situations. Good Grief Camp provides “…an environment where they have the opportunity to feel safe getting their feelings out while memorializing their loved one through a variety of fun, therapeutic activities.”

The Summer Reading Program wouldn’t be complete without its final event — the sixth annual Edible Book Feast Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 5, sponsored by Bookworks bookstore. Start thinking about your entry now.
