Twins go 3-2 at Spokane Wood Bat Classic
The Glacier Twins headed to Spokane for the 2023 Wood Bat Classic over the Fourth of July weekend.
The Twins started out with two wins on Friday, then lost their morning game on Saturday but followed it up with a close 3-2 win over Sherwood Park Dukes 18U. That put them in third place in their division of the large-scale tournament, setting up a final game on Sunday. Glacier dropped the final game against North Spokane Dodgers 18U in a low-scoring 0-1 loss.
Starting off the tournament, Glacier defeated the Spokane Northstars 6-2. A three-run inning in the fifth gave the Twins a commanding lead which they held onto. The Twins had 11 hits led by Mikey Glass, Maddox Muller and Josiah Ruther with multiple hits.
Next, the Twins shut out the Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs. Glass was on the mound for Glacier and went six innings allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out nine. A rally in the sixth inning was highlighted by doubles from both Glass and Jake McIntyre. Four runs in the sixth closed the game out.
On Saturday, the Glacier Twins went 1-1. They lost 7-2 to the Moose Monarchs they had defeated the previous day. The Monarchs put up three runs in the first inning and never lost the lead after that. Glacier had eight hits but only managed to score two runs.
In the second game of the day, the Twins won 3-2 over the Sherwood Park Dukes. A walk-off error by Sherwood Park in the bottom of the seventh handed the win to the Twins. Pitching was strong on both sides as Talon Murphy started on the mound, lasting four innings. Muller came in as relief for three innings giving up three hits and one run.
In the final game of the Classic, the North Spokane Dodgers won 1-0 over the Twins. Pitching again was strong on both sides with both teams only tallying four hits each. For the Twins, Dayne Tu started the game pitching and recorded 18 outs. The Dodgers scored one run in the fourth which was enough for the win.
Earlier in the week, the Twins defeated Cranbrook twice winning 3-2 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game of a doubleheader at home. The Twins are now 16-4 overall this season with a month remaining.
Glacier will play the Bitterroot Bucs on Wednesday at Memorial Field in Whitefish beginning at 1 p.m. Then the Twins host the Ed Gallo Memorial Wood Bat tournament Thursday through Sunday, July 6-9, at home.
