The Flathead Rivers Alliance starts 2023 by naming Sheena Pate as the organization’s first executive director.

Pate began her service with Flathead Rivers Alliance (FRA) in 2021 as a contracted Watershed Coordinator, jumpstarting the organization’s flagship River Ambassador Program, one of only two in the State of Montana at that time. In 2022, she led efforts that resulted in 111 stream miles improved, 240-plus volunteers, over 800 volunteer hours, four programs, seven projects, five events, and a co‐hosted Big Sky Watershed Corps Member with Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park. She looks to move forward with the organization’s robust portfolio of projects, programs and signature events, and strengthen partnerships to support the preservation of the Flathead River system.

Formed in 2019, Flathead Rivers Alliance has established itself in a short time as the standard bearer for conservation and stewardship of the three forks of the Flathead River.

“Our ability to bring a diverse group of individuals, agencies, local businesses and conservation organizations together has resulted in several significant accomplishments. FRA has taken the lead on building capacity around water quality, identifying barriers for river ADA accessibility, boosting river recreate responsibly and safety messaging, bringing awareness to Comprehensive River Management Plan and so much more. We are pleased to have Sheena as FRA’s first executive director to support a collective vision of a resilient and healthy river ecosystem with people interacting respectfully and responsibly,” says Bob Jordan, FRA’s Board President.

Sheena holds degrees from the University of Montana in Environmental Studies and Colorado State University in Watershed Science and credits the opportunity to work with Montana Watershed Education Network in 2006 as the catalyst for her career path. She has enjoyed over 15 years as a hydrologist, communication specialist and project coordinator for various agencies, nonprofits and river restoration engineering firms, in Montana and Colorado. Before joining FRA, she led the Crown of the Continent Geotourism Council for 7.5 years focusing on transboundary partnerships that moved forward initiatives to enhance and sustain the geographical character of place with which communities and economies benefit. She strongly believes that awareness is an essential stepping stone towards the realization and protection of our natural resources for future generations.

During her free time she seeks adventures on rivers and in wild places with her children and dog in tow.
