Feb. 8, 1973

An ordinance providing two salary increases was introduced before the City Council. It was unanimously agreed to raise the salary of the city police judge from $140 to $200 and the city treasurer from $160 to $200. A second ordinance will increase the mayor’s salary to $200 per month and the aldermen to $75. Also at the meeting, Terry Nelson of the parade committee for the Winter Carnival, requested the city’s aid in supplying snow for the parade site. The council agreed to help providing that snow is available.

Feb. 10, 1983

Brian Wilson and John Roche, both of Calgary, purchased the Remington Bar and Hotel in Whitefish. Jack Sesler, who previously owned the bar with his sons, will retain small ownership in the business. The new owners said they plan no major changes for the business but they do hope to better utilize the space of the bar. “We hope to produce the type of entertainment that is community-oriented and that caters to many age groups,” Wilson said.

Feb. 11, 1993

On Feb. 4, Marchia Litchfield was sworn in as Whitefish’s first woman postmaster. Litchfield came to Whitefish from Kalispell, where she served as the superintendent of postal operations for the past eight years. Prior to holding that position, Litchfield was the superintendent of the Whitefish post office for five years and was a postal carrier in Kalispell for another three. She has a total of 13.5 years of experience with the U.S. Postal Service.

Feb. 6, 2003

Muldown Elementary had experienced 58 cases of chickenpox between Oct. 1 and Jan. 27, according to Muldown secretary Becky Goeres. With 540 students at Muldown, chicken pox had stricken almost 11% of the student body. “We’ve been keeping track of chickenpox cases for the past few years and this year is at least double the normal outbreak, and maybe more,“ said Goeres.

Feb. 6, 2013

Local developers have purchased the old North Valley Hospital property on the corner of U.S. 93 South and East 13th Street with the prospect of redeveloping the site into a four-year college or university campus. Partners in the project, Don DuBeau and Sam Baldridge were still in the exploratory stages but said the potential for the site as a college is “enormous.”
