50 Years Ago

Aug. 23, 1973

Terri Wheeler of Whitefish captured first place in the girls 100-yard low hurdles event with a performance of 14.4 at the National AAU Junior Olympic championships held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Wheeler broke the national AAU Junior Olympic 100-meter hurdles record with a 14.1 run in preliminary competition the day before and then won her gold medal despite the fact that the last hurdle was misplaced in the championship run, requiring her to change her stride to clear it.

40 Years Ago

August 25, 1983

Consolidated Georex Geophysics added a second crew to its oil and gas testing operations in the Glacier View District of Flathead National Forest. The company is operating crews on two separate blast lines, using four helicopters. One crew is working in the Whale Creek-Tepee Creek drainage. The other crew is setting blast lines in the Big Creek drainage. “People that are using Big Creek Campground will be hearing the bangs and helicopter activities during the week,” said Ron DesJardins of Glacier View.

August 26, 1993

Affordable housing and an effective transportation system will be key items in the master plan revision. The current study of U.S. Hwy. 93 south is one example of the type of transportation problems facing Whitefish. By-pass routes are being considered to alleviate downtown traffic congestion. Some of the issues and goals of the current master plan are outdated. It is surprising, however, that many of the same problems still face Whitefish as they did in the early 1980s.

August 21, 2003

A burglar with a penchant for fine wine and seafood met his match with a neighborhood watch group on Columbia Avenue. Neighbors helped police nab a burglar suspected of a series of thefts from Lakeside businesses. Police confiscated 86 bottles of wine and assorted liquors valued at $2,800 from the alleged burglar. Later, officers also found prawns, halibut and corned beef in the man’s possession. “Neighborhood watch works,” said investigating detective Dan Frank.

The developers presented their plan in detail, dozens of neighbors had their say and still no decision was made on the controversial proposal for a large-scale apartment and condo project on East Second Street. Whitefish City Council voted 5-1 to table a discussion on the proposed Second Street Residences after hearing more than three hours of public comment. Phil Mitchell was the lone vote against. Councilman Bill Kahle motioned to table as the clock on the chamber wall crept past midnight.
