Excitement builds ahead of Bulldog football season
Judging by the number of kids looking to put on a Bulldog helmet, the excitement after last year's football season, which included seven wins and a playoff victory, has carried over into this season.
"We have a great turnout this season," Whitefish Head Football Coach Brett Bollweg said. "I believe it's the biggest team that we've had since I have been coaching here."
Summer workouts were also productive for the Bulldogs, who are looking to take on a tough Western A Conference once again. With the addition of Class B football power Bigfork to the mix, the strength of the schedule should be an excellent test for a team preparing for the playoffs.
"The Western A is again really tough," Bollweg said. "We have the four top seeds from last year's season on our schedule, along with Bigfork and Eureka, who have dominated in recent years. We really have to bring out our best every week to be competitive."
The players are welcoming the challenge as the roster is full of dynamic players who can make plays with their hands. Last year the team won six straight games, and during that streak, the average margin of victory was 21 points. The Bulldogs defeated Havre 17-7 in the playoffs before falling to Hamilton.
"Our guys are excited," Bollweg said. "They have been at it since January in the gym to get themselves to this point. We can start to feel the anxiousness to play under Friday night lights."
Mason Kelch will be a returning All-State receiver for the Bulldogs, and Bollweg said he can't wait to watch him step into a new role and lead the team. Ryder Barinowski will help on offense, defense, and special teams, while Henry Bennetts and Sam Akey should anchor the line and defense.
"Brady Howke is another kid we are expecting to make an impact for us on both sides," Bollweg said. "Our entire group of skill guys is impressive — Dane Hunt, Jesse Burrough, Carson Krack, Morgan Kyle, Carson Gulick, and CJ Threw are all names that should stand out."
The strength this year will be in the team's athleticism. Bollweg said the key is the line being consistent up front so the backfield can attack other Western A defenses.
The Bulldogs take on Hamilton at home to open the season Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
