Chilly weather didn’t hold back Whitefish track and field athletes from performing well at the Iceberg Invite in Columbia Falls on Saturday.

The Whitefish boys team took third place at the meet with 54 points, finishing behind Columbia Falls (128) in first and Hamilton (122) in second place.

Bulldog junior Carson Krack had a big day for Whitefish, winning in the triple jump with a mark of 41 feet, 1 inch. Krack also competed in the high jump for the first time ever and cleared 5 feet, 6 inches for fifth place. He then also PR’d in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.22 for third place.

“Carson Krack had his best day of the year, kind of a day we’ve been waiting for him to have,” Whitefish boys coach Willie Roche said.

The Whitefish boys long relay team managed to hold off Eureka for first in the 4X400 relay with a time of 3:46.8. The boys distance crew also crushed again, with Mason Genovese, Simon Douglas and Ruedi Steiner taking third through fifth places respectively; each hit a season or personal record. In the 100 meter dash, Whitefish’s Morgan Kyle hit a season best of 12.16 for sixth place.

“We’re really young right now, but our youth is showing signs of competitiveness that I haven’t seen in the last few years… willingness to do what’s hard, willingness to do what’s right for the team, and I think that’s a big thing from our young kids,” Roche said.

The Whitefish girls team took second place overall with 75 points to Hamilton’s 123. The highlight for the girls team was Maeve Ingelfinger who ran the mile in a personal best time of 5:23.70 to nab first place. Her time is also now the best in Class A for the 1600 meter event and she hit her PR in someone else’s shoes as hers were hurting her that day.

“Out of nowhere she’s got the fastest time in the mile in Class A,” Roche recalled. “She’s not really much of a miler, she knocked 20 seconds off her time and she did it wearing one of the boys on our team’s shoes.”

Coaches believe Ingelfinger will be a big part of the success for the girls team.

Whitefish junior Brooke Zetooney won the 100 meter dash and junior teammate Hailey Ells won the 300 meter hurdles. In discus, Drew Steele threw a personal best of 92-11 for sixth place.

Whitefish was scheduled to compete at the Top 10 meet in Missoula on Tuesday after press time. Then on Saturday, the Bulldogs will host the annual Whitefish A.R.M. Invite starting at 10 a.m. at Whitefish High School.
