Softball off to slow start with varsity schedule
The Whitefish softball team played its first varsity games in over three years last week.
The girls got off to a slow start adjusting to the higher level of play, dropping all three games. Whitefish fell to Thompson Falls 16-1, Ronan 16-0, and Polson 19-0.
Head coach Dave Bennetts says despite the scores, the team is learning and progressing with each game.
“The girls are bonding together and are improving each game, even though the scores may not indicate that,” he said.
In 2019 the softball season was canceled when only six girls came out for the team. The 2020 season was also canceled due to the pandemic and then the last two years Whitefish has played a junior varsity schedule only while trying to build the program back up. This season the softball team has 16 athletes on the team, the most they’ve had in four years.
Whitefish will play again this week when the team hosts its first home game of the season against Eureka on Friday. Game time is 3 p.m. for varsity and 5 p.m. for JV.
