Earth Day activities in April
Flathead County residents can celebrate Earth Day every day in April. Local non-profit, Climate Smart Glacier Country (CDGC), encourages everyone to take time this month to celebrate our planet and has compiled its third annual “Earth Month” on-line calendar with activities throughout the month of April.
The calendar has information about local non-profit events, educational activities and community information for a green lifestyle. Residents can find out how to volunteer for
community clean-ups or attend a local family-friendly Earth Day event.
Every Monday in April, Climate Smart Glacier Country will also be sponsoring a weekly challenge with prizes to encourage walking, riding the bus or bicycling to work/school. One contest encourages people to take the “Plastic Pledge” to reduce their use of plastic.
Participants can link to a contest form through the calendar and log their activities. Prizes include gift cards at local eateries.
The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970, as a nationwide teach-in on environmental issues. Last year, more than 100 million people in 192 countries took action by planting trees, seeking additional education and making commitments to waste reduction and energy conservation.
Climate Smart Glacier Country formed in 2016 and is a non-profit organization based in Flathead County which partners with community groups on Earth Day activities.
This year, CSGC will have a table at the Climate Lobby Earth Day event on Saturday, April 22, at the Northwest History Museum. CSGC will be distributing free Earth Day coloring books and locally manufactured products made from recycled material.
Whether participating in community events, planning a family activity or acting individually, there are many ways to contribute to a healthy environment and have fun doing it.
“The Earth Month calendar has something for everyone,” says CSGC board member Kate McMahon.
