September 14, 1972
The hospital board announced completion of the patient room air conditioning project. It had a total cost of $32,000. Dick Adams, President of the Hospital Governing Board, said the new 50-ton unit was in operation for most of August and both patients and hospital personnel were extremely pleased.

September 16, 1982
An object thought to be a missing Canadian plane was located in Bitterroot Lake. Flathead County Sheriff Al Rierson said special equipment would reveal whether the object was the Cessna 150 which disappeared in late August on a flight from Penticton, B.C., to Vancouver, B.C. The equipment included an underwater television camera and a device to lift the plane from the water.

Riding bicycles on the sidewalks was against the law but the viaduct posed a Catch-22 for cyclists as the speed limit was often exceeded by traffic and the sidewalks were too narrow for riders and pedestrians to pass each other. As a result of numerous complaints from pedestrians, Whitefish police began enforcing the “no riding on the sidewalks” law on the viaduct. Chief Bill La Brie called it an “unfortunate situation” but it was necessary to avoid bicycle-pedestrian accidents.

North Valley Hospital Chief Executive Officer Craig Aasved said the new hospital will be built at a new location. He said he didn’t have a time frame for the start of the construction nor did he have a location and the hospital did not yet have financing secured. One reason they chose to build rather than remodel was the cost. The hospital said remodeling costs “today are $10-$12 million due to new safety codes established by the state of Montana.”

The city of Whitefish warned people to not feed the bears after Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials were forced to euthanize a grizzly bear in the Whitefish area that had become food-conditioned. Residents must secure their garbage containers in an area that is not accessible to bears and they are only to be taken to the street for collection no earlier than 4 a.m. the day of collections and returned no later than 7 p.m. the same day. Violators may be fined up to $500.
