May 25 , 1972

A total of 112 Whitefish seniors received their diplomas at commencement exercises at Whitefish High School. Elaine Drell delivered the salutatory address and welcome. Ken Scovill gave the valedictory address entitled, “The Future is Ours.” Dr. Harry Ray, Professor of Education at the University of Montana, gave the commencement address entitled, “Congratulations, Now What?”

May 27, 1982

Only 12.3% of the 4,064 registered voters in Whitefish turned out for the District 44 mill levy election. Those who did vote accepted all three requests on the ballot. The high school levy was approved 309 to 198, the elementary 311 to 189 and the building reserve fund was given the green light by a 338 to 164 margin. The vote turnout was the lowest since 1979.

May 28, 1992

The results of the long-awaited city-wide traffic study were finally in the hands of the Whitefish City Council. The study was originally centered on four areas but the scope was later widened to include most of the city. The consultants divided streets into four classifications: principal arterials, minor arterials, collectors and local streets.

May 23, 2002

As part of his work with the House Transportation Committee, Representative Denny Rehberg was trying to learn as much as he could about security and border safety so he met with three border patrol officers. He said he’s sure there will be other efforts to terrorize and attack America. Congress had been told that in test cases, federal officials acting undercover were able to sneak prohibited items aboard airplanes 75% of the time.

Whitefish High School students rallied around principal Dave Carlson and asked the school board to continue his contract. The board listened to an hour and a half of public comment before voting to renew Carlson’s contract during a special meeting at the middle school. More than 100 students attended the meeting.
