July 13, 1972

A torchlight boat parade, coronation of a new queen, power and sailboat races were some of the events during the 34th annual Aluminum Cup Regatta at the City Beach in Whitefish. Some of the northwest’s top inboard and outboard racing boats were on hand for the Whitefish races and a new feature attraction was a marathon race between OPC tunnel hull boats.

July 15, 1982

Protecting the quality of Whitefish Lake and its watershed was its goal and the Whitefish Basin Project Steering Committee was running full-steam to get a management district on the fall’s general election ballot. Petitions were circulated in the area around Whitefish Lake that the committee decided on for its district. The drive to obtain a district was the culmination of years of meetings, which increased in frequency and seriousness since last fall.

July 16, 1992

The Whitefish City Council was expected to approve the $8.67 million budget. The Whitefish Volunteer Fire Department would likely receive funding for a new fire marshal position, the first paid position in the history of that department.The city parks department was likely to receive funding for a “manager of parks and recreation” position. Funding for two additional personnel requested by the police department was not included in the budget.

People in Whitefish waited 10 to 12 years for renovations and/or remodeling of the town’s historic Central School and now they would have to wait a bit longer. The school board decided to begin the process of hiring an architectural firm to work on several proposals and give the cost and feasibility of each. The board wants more bang for the buck and a facility that corresponds with the school district's master plan.The plan has to have a price tag of $8.9 million or less.

A black bear that had become a nuisance in a residential neighborhood of Whitefish was shot and killed by Whitefish police. The “problem” bear had been getting into garbage near Edgewood Place and Colorado Avenue. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Whitefish police decided to destroy the bear as a safety precaution. Police Chief Bill Dial plans to meet with city officials and discuss better ways to secure large garbage containers.
