Bulldog golf sweeps Western A Kickoff in Whitefish

| August 31, 2022 1:00 AM

The Whitefish Bulldogs golf team hosted the Western A kickoff tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club last week and the boys and girls teams both emerged victorious.

“The Western A kick off was a big success,” said Coach Tait Rocksund. “Both our boys and girls teams won their home invite.”

The Bulldog boys’ winning team score was 322; Corvallis was second with 334 and Hamilton came in third place with 338.

“Billy Smith was in Big Sky playing in an AJGA tournament. He played well, posting a -1 total and a top 20 finish at Big Sky,” said Rocksund. “Given we were without our number one, we played pretty solid.”

Libby’s Reece Malyevak topped the field, shooting 70 on the day while Brady Powell from Corvallis finished with a 73 and Whitefish’s Johnny Nix scored 75 to take third place. Nix was the top finisher for Whitefish.

“Tag Walker continues to make his case for securing a varsity spot at the number five seed and Matthew Peschel continues his steady play,” said Rocksund.

Bulldog Matthew Peschel finished in fifth place overall with 78 while teammates Riley Brown with an 81 and CJ Thew with an 88 helped the team to another win. Whitefish’s Tag Walker scored a 92.

Billy Smith missed the Western A kickoff because was playing in an AJGA tournament.

The Whitefish girls team placed first in the team standings with a score of 446. Hamilton took second with 452 and Ronan captured third, shooting 473.

“Stella Jaffe and Leia Brennan anchored our girls team, with strong showings from freshmen Ava Zignego and Lauren Fairbanks,” said Rocksund. “Our girls team continues to build momentum as the season progresses.”

East Helena’s Taylor Hadley shot a 90, the best score for the day among the girls. Brooklyn Brown from Hamilton shot a 94 for second place and Whitefish’s Stella Jaffe sewed up third with a score of 97.

Bulldog freshman Ava Zignego improved her performance from four days earlier in Browning by two strokes to finish with a 117. Teammates Leia Brennan shot 104 to place sixth overall and Lauren Fairbanks shot a 128.
