Whitefish Lake Golf Course now open for season
Golf Course opens
The Whitefish Lake Golf Club is now open for daily play. The later than normal opening date was the product of the coldest April on record for Montana. When it’s this cold and we get occasional snow it is next to impossible to get the course ready for play. Soil temps need to get to 50-plus degrees before the turf starts to actively grow and recover from winter and with cold nights that’s not been happening.
Deck prepares to open
The extremely popular deck at Whitefish Lake Golf Club is tentatively set to open officially on May 7, just in time for the Season Opener golf tournament. Let’s all hope the weather cooperates and we return to normal temperatures soon so we can all enjoy a relaxing time on the deck.
Mike Combs New Superintendent
With Dick Collins retiring last winter after 44 years at the helm, WLGC’s new Green Superintendent, Mike Combs, has taken over the maintenance of what is one of the busiest golf facilities in the state. Mike brings 26 years of varied experience to Whitefish with his latest tenure at Buffalo Hills Golf Club in Kalispell. Mike was raised in the Flathead and played golf for Flathead High School in the mid-80s and is an excellent player. You may notice a few small changes as Mike takes over the operation. We all welcome Mike Combs to Whitefish and look forward to working with him in the next phase of WLGC’s history.
Wind does some pruning
The wind removed the tree on the left-hand side and about 70 yards short of the green on the par five 16th hole of the North Course a couple of weeks ago, and plans, for now, are to see how play is affected by the absence of that tree. So far I’ve not heard a lot of whining about the tree disappearing.
Starters need your help
As we have several new starters this year it would be really helpful for all golfers, new and old, to introduce yourselves so they can begin to recognize you during check-in for your tee time. This will help speed up the process by making everything move more smoothly as we get into the busy season.
Avoid wet areas with your cart
The emerging turf is even more sensitive to traffic wear as it starts to grow. Please avoid all areas that are wet and follow the cart signs times. For now, we have been limiting carts to paths only on holes 6-13 on the South Course.
