50 Years Ago

April 20, 1972

A special levy election was scheduled to help solve the problem of a budget shortage of about $130,000 in School District 44. According to school officials the budget for the 1972-73 school year could not be stretched to cover high school expenditures such as teachers’ supplies, new textbooks and improvements in the English and history departments.

40 Years Ago

April 22, 1982

The City of Whitefish announced it is in the garbage business to stay – that it would purchase dumpsters on its own and set minimum rates for all businesses, whether they use the service or not. The announcement ended the quest by a local hauler to take over the city’s business services and ended confusion over commercial rates.

30 Years Ago

April 16, 1992

More than 60 students signed up to participate in Whitefish High School’s first workshop on the AIDS virus. The PTA hosted the 3 ½ hour long workshop which featured a panel discussion with families whose members were fighting the disease as well as a Flathead County resident who was battling AIDS.

20 Years Ago

April 18, 2002

The majority of those who spoke at the Whitefish CIty Council meeting were in favor of bike paths, negotiating easements and condemning private property as a last measure. The hearing addressed a motion to discontinue condemnation for the bike, pedestrian and River Trail paths and more than 40 people signed up to speak about the fate of the paths in Whitefish.

April 18, 2012

The Whitefish School Board addressed a policy in the student handbook that outlined how students may style their hair. Revisions adopted by Muldown, the high school, and the middle school said “unnatural hair colors and styles” were a distraction and that students must keep hair out of their faces “to provide clear vision and promote good eye contact.”
