Whitefish track and field teams finally compete in two meets
After a tough beginning to the season with three meets being canceled due to weather conditions, the Whitefish track and field team finally saw competition last week.
Whitefish High School hosted a Dog-Cat Dual track meet on Thursday with Columbia Falls before traveling to Missoula for the large MCPS Invite on Saturday.
Whitefish’s Talon Holmquist dominated the shot put in both meets with his best of 51 feet, 8 inches coming on Thursday against Columbia Falls. Holmquist’s mark is a state-best throw in the event. He also competed in javelin and his 134-00 mark placed him fourth among Class A athletes.
On the girls side in the throwing events, Drew Steele came out strong in the first two meets. Against CFalls on Thursday she took first in shot put with a throw of 30-03 and second in discus. At the Missoula meet with schools from all classes attending, she placed 18 in shot put.
“I’m super excited about Drew Steele in the throwing events, she had an awesome meet on Thursday,” Whitefish girls coach Kelliann Blackburn said. “She’s a sophomore and she’s really starting to show promise in those throwing events.”
In the jumps, Erin Wilde looked strong in the long and high jump last week. She took first in the high jump on Thursday, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches, and placed second at the MCPS Invite. With her performance, she qualified for state in the high jump.
Bulldog senior Gabe Menicke also won the high jump event for the boys team on Thursday with a height of 5-6.
Sophomore sprinter Brooke Zetooney had a strong start to the season as well. She sprinted to first in the 200 meters against Columbia Falls and then finished second in the 100 meter dash at the MCPS Invite among over 40 athletes in the event. Her time of 13.09 already qualifies her to compete in the event at state.
Whitefish’s Bodie Smith had an impressive showing in 110 hurdles with a time of 15.95 seconds — so far the best time in Class A. That time already qualifies him for state in that event. His long jump distance of 20-3 is also ranked eighth in the state.
The track team battled cold wintery weather last week through both meets. The MCPS meet was also cut short due to snow.
“Overall everyone competed, battling weather,” Blackburn recalled. “It was awful in Missoula, it started snowing and they kept it going for about an hour and a half in the snow. Those kids were just mentally tough and got it done.”
The Whitefish track team was scheduled to travel to Bigfork on Tuesday after press time for a make-up meet that was canceled in early April.
Looking ahead the Whitefish track team will compete at the Columbia Falls Invite on Saturday and then the Top Ten meet next Tuesday.
