Golf Column: Practice smarter with your driver
Ryder Cup
Perhaps the best USA team ever to play in the Ryder Cup, and the results proved it with a record winning margin of 10 points and most ever in the new format at 19 team points. It was fun to watch a group of guys that compete with each other 51 weeks a year come together for the victory. Perhaps our national level politicians could take a note and work toward the good of the country as well. Dustin Johnson was the star amongst the best players winning 5 matches and losing none. I particularly enjoyed watching Scotty Scheffler take down Jon Rohm in the singles matches to set the stage for the American run. This is perhaps the best event in golf to watch, along with the Masters.
Hole In One
Larry Jensen got his first hole in one after playing the game for 71 years. Larry’s ace came on the 16th hole on the South Course with witnesses being Gary Lee and Mike Taylor. Congrats Larry on recording that special shot to get the hole in one.
Practice smarter with your driver.
It does not much good to go to the range and pound your driver all over the place and with no plan. Try focusing hard on a target and use alignment rods to improve your set up for the shot. Most players tend to take their stance and then aim the club, unfortunately that is the opposite of how best to align the club-face toward the target. Always aim the club face toward the desired target and then take your stance.
Annual Meeting October 16th
The Annual Meeting of the WLGA will take place on Saturday, Oct. 16 starting at 9:30 a.m. The usual hosted brunch will be scaled back slightly due to Covid and social distancing. The election of the new board members has five Tier One members running for two open seats on the board for 2022 to 2024 terms. Rick Billuni, Rod Brady, Don Hanson, Mike Rossi and David Scott are in the race and absentee ballots will be available starting on Saturday, Oct. 2 in the Golf Shop for those Tier One members not planning to attend the annual meeting.
World’s Hardest Tournament
The 2021 World’s Hardest golf tournament will be held on Oct. 9 with tee times on the South Course. This fun event is challenging because you and your partner will play the course in uniquely different routes and see hole locations even the most angry crew member would not set. This is cross country golf at its finest.
