Caution advised as bears spotted around town
The City of Whitefish is reminding folks to take precautions as bears have been spotted roaming in the community.
Working closely with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the city says both grizzly and black bears have been identified.
“With the change in season and increased bear activity, now is the time to be diligent in securing all garbage and attractants to reduce the risk of potentially dangerous human-bear encounters,” the city said in an alert over the weekend.
Residents are reminded to secure their garbage, which can attract bears.
City ordinance requires that homeowners who have individual trash cans assigned to their residence must secure the garbage can in an enclosure that is secure from animals or they must have an animal-resistant container. Additionally, garbage cans are to be taken to the curb for pick up no earlier than 4 a.m. the day of collection and must be taken back to the residence by 7 p.m. the same day.
Trash cans can not remain at the curb. Fines for those who are non-compliant can be up to $500.
Also, those out enjoying trails and other recreational opportunities, need to be aware that bears may be present and follow guidelines by FWP to be Bear Aware. Safety guidelines include carrying bear spray, never feeding wildlife especially bears, know the difference between grizzly and black bears, always keep a safe distance from wildlife and use an electrified fence to keep livestock and pets safe. When recreating in bear country it’s important to stay alert for bear activity, travel in groups, make noise whenever possible to avoid surprising a bear and when camping keep food and anything with a scent out of tents.
