Whitefish’s Planning and Building Department reported that more than a dozen permits to put up new homes passed through the city office in the previous two weeks. This was more activity than the department had seen in the past year. The largest builds included a $1.3 million project planned for Iron Horse, a $450,000 home at The Lakes and a $380,000 home on Grouse Mountain.

Whitefish High School was preparing for graduation with 166 students scheduled to get their diplomas. The Whitefish Independent High School was set to see its first graduates at 10 students earning their diplomas through the alternative school.

Two years prior Mountain Mall stood more than half empty and was on the edge of financial disaster, the victim of a poor economy and poor planning. But the mall was recovering with occupancy at almost 80 percent and four new tenants having moved in during the previous 60 days.

Boats reaching speeds up to 100 mph would be racing around Whitefish Lake for the seventh annual Viking Regatta. Both power and sailboats would be racing during the two day event.

A total of 123 Whitefish seniors were set to make up the graduating Class of 1971 as they received diplomas during graduation. The commencement speaker was Dr. Jerrold Johnson and the subject of his speech was “I Gotta Be Me.”
