Whitefish’s split from the Flathead County Library hit another round of turbulence when dumpsters were filled three feet deep with library books. The discovery left some questioning why the county would throw out books that could still be useful to others, including the soon to be established Whitefish Community Library.

Voters approved two levies for the Whitefish School District. Both the elementary and high school levies won in close votes. Pat Jarvi and David Kauffman were also elected as the newest members of the school board.

May 9, 1991

A faction of downtown merchants urged the Whitefish City Council to take a “broader look at many alternatives to enhance downtown” before converting Central Avenue into a one-way street. Many of those in attendance suggested the money earmarked toward the renovation would be better spent on finding a solution to the downtown parking problem.

40 years ago

May 7, 1981

Three unrelated occurrences in the last three weeks had drawn attention to problems with sewage treatment at separate areas on Big Mountain. An accidental sewage spill from the Big Mountain Resort’s facilities, denial of the preliminary plat of another development, and a suit by the state against Ptarmigan Village all happened during the period.

Six girls and six boys from Whitefish High School’s chorus, the largest group ever to be selected from Whitefish, were picked by the all-state officials to join voices with others form around the state for the State Music Festival.
