An onslaught of cool and moist weather had added more snow to an already deep snowpack in local mountain ranges. SNOTEL sites across the region were showing anywhere from 130 to 150 percent above average.

Nathan Closson, a 17-year-old Whitefish High School student, won the Best in Show at the 2001 Montana Junior Duck Stamp Contest with his acrylic painting of a pair of green-winged teal ducks. The win qualified him for the national competition and earned him some cash and prizes.

Wetlands had become the main issue of the expansion of the Whitefish Lake Golf Course from 27 to 36 holes. Several agencies had denied granting a permit to allow the construction of the course along the northwest shore of Lost Loon Lake until the wetlands issue was settled.

Shortly after being tipped off by a witness, Whitefish and Kalispell police arrested a Washington couple suspected of stealing a large amount of narcotics from Haines Drug Store. A neighboring business owner noticed a car driving back and forth on Central Avenue about 4:30 a.m. He then heard breaking glass, and saw a man run from in front of the drug store, and leap in the car.

Christ Lutheran Church was set to celebrate the retirement of an indebtedness on its 20-room educational building, a parsonage and a house. Following its worship service a symbolic “burning of the mortgage” was planned.
