Mayor Mike Jenson broke a tie vote to determine that the city would hold a mail-in election in the fall. The mail-in ballot cost more, but resulted in higher voter turnout. Turnout was 22% in 2005 with polling places and 47% in 2007 with mail-in ballots.

March 15, 2001

The Whitefish volleyball team were state champions. It was the second state title in the program’s history with the previous one in 1986.

30 years ago

March 14, 1991

The Whitefish Bulldog boys basketball team was celebrating winning the state championship. It had been 21 years since the team had last won the State Class A championship. The team returned to town with several hundred fans gathering to congratulate them. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 20-4 record.

40 years ago

March 12, 1981

If recommended Amtrak budget cuts were approved by Congress, the Flathead Valley would lose all passenger train service on Oct. 1. Congress was holding hearings on budget cuts that would mean 35% less than the then-current Amtrak budget.

March 11, 1971

The Whitefish Rifle and Pistol Club has requested the State Forester to discontinue the license for a shooting range near Skyles Lake west of Whitefish. The club requested the action because the site was no longer desirable due to the possible dangers to adjacent residents and property.
