Application period opens for Voisin scholarship

| March 3, 2021 1:00 AM

Applications for the Maggie Voisin Whitefish Freestyle Team Scholarship have opened.

This is earlier than in previous years, so prospective athletes should begin prepping their applications now. The scholarship award covers fees for the Freestyle team membership, as well as a season pass to Whitefish Mountain Resort. Applications close on Tuesday, March 23, and the winner will be announced on Saturday, March 27.

Olympian Maggie Voisin will once again review applicants' essays and select the winner of the scholarship, which was awarded to Libby local Riley McNew for the 2020/21 season. Selection is by who best portrays their passion for freestyle skiing or snowboarding, their dedication to improvement, how they will commit to hard work, as well as their appreciation for the sport and why it is fun.

Voisin was born and raised in Whitefish, Montana, and is an alumnus of Whitefish Mountain Resort's Freestyle Team. She is a current member of the US Freeski team, a two-time Olympian and a seven time X Games Medalist. Maggie has been sponsored by Explore Whitefish since she was thirteen-years-old, which helped cover competition and travel expenses in her early years. In 2020 U.S. Ski and Snowboard named her "Freeskiing Athlete of the Year."

The Maggie Voisin scholarship is unique, as traditional athletic scholarships are often based on performance or financial need. Whitefish Freestyle Inc., the non-profit partner to the Freestyle Team, will administer Maggie's scholarship. They also offer their own financial need-based scholarship program.
