The Whitefish School Board renewed the district’s drug testing policy that continued its opt-in/opt-out program for random drug testing of students participating in extracurricular activities. It also continued its reasonable suspicion policy that allowed for the testing of any student believed to be under the influence.

The largest city budget in Whitefish history was ready to be presented to City Council. The fiscal year 2002 budget was expected to exceed $30 million out-pacing the previous year’s record $26 million budget. Capital projects, such as extensive street construction work, a roof for the ice rink and plans for a proposed aquatics center, pushed the budget numbers up.

Montana Department of Highways officials told local citizens no thanks after the group pleaded for a reevaluation of the state’s highway 93 plan. A group of citizens from Kalispell and Whitefish drove to Helena with a petition containing more than 400 signatures of those opposed to the proposed five-lane highway plan that would span the two cities.

A former Whitefish High School student was charged with deliberty setting fire to the high school building on Feb. 10, 1977. Bruce Allen Frey attended high school in Whitefish, but didn’t graduate. Only part of the school was saved in the fire that occured four years prior.

Between 200 and 250 Rotarians were expected in Whitefish for the annual conference of the Montana Rotary District to be held at Big Mountain Ski Resort. Membership for the meeting would be drawn from all the 29 clubs in Montana.
