Man in custody after brief standoff near schools
A man is in custody after a brief standoff in Whitefish Friday morning.
According to information from the Whitefish Police Department, it received a call at about 8 a.m. about an RV parked on the 1300 block of East Fourth Street.
The caller believed a person was living in the RV and that it had been there for the past couple of days.
Officers made contact with a man, who had an active arrest warrant. The man was uncooperative and refused to exit the trailer. He claimed to be in possession of multiple firearms and threatened to shoot officers and himself.
After about 45 minutes, officers were able to talk the subject out of the trailer and took him into custody.
A city employee said authorities weren’t ready to release the man’s name.
Officers from the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
Due to the incident taking place in proximity of both Whitefish High School and Muldown Elementary School, both schools were notified of the incident and were requested to implement the emergency lockdown procedure “teach and contain.”
