The Whitefish City Council made no changes to a city ordinance allowing residents to have up to five chickens as pets in residential zones without a permit. This ordinance was approved in 2009 and upon approval council had called for a review in two years time. In those two years there had only been one complaint about chickens loose on Denver Avenue.

Jan. 25, 2001

The Columbia Falls Aluminum Co. had announced they would shut down aluminum production by week's end.They would plan to open again in one year at 50% production. The shutdown came in wake of a deal with Bonneville Power Administration that would allow CFAC to resell BPA power at a considerable markup. Managers at the company had said the power was just much more valuable than the metal.

Jan.31, 1991

Sidewalk rallies were being held by the Whitefish Peace Alliance in support of American troops being sent to the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile a forum sponsored by the Flathead Peace Alliance drew about 45 citizens to the Mountain Mall who spoke out on the concerns they had regarding the Persian Gulf War and the local youngsters being sent there.

Jan. 29, 1981

Whitefish had been experiencing somewhat of a “snow drought,” but that week two feet of dense snow fell on Big Mountain and the skiing improved overnight to excellent conditions. Another low pressure trough was headed toward Whitefish later that week and the resort had 54 inches on top and 30 at the bottom.

Jan. 28, 1971

Whitefish Winter Carnival preparations were well underway. Gene Hedman had just been announced as the Prime Minister and he was to be joined the following week by King Ullr XII, his nominal boss in Carnival hierarchy. A week after crowning King Ullr XII, he would be joined by a new queen as traditions continued.
