Local Kyler Morrison had recently collaborated with the Whitefish Rotary club to establish the first Special Olympics adult team in Whitefish. The team was to be called the Whitefish Thunder. Morrison had participated in the Winter Games all through school and wanted to establish a team in Whitefish and the Rotary club jumped in with the first initial $1,000 to get it started.

20 years ago

Feb. 2, 2001

There had been a recent appointment of four people to fill out the board of the Housing Authority and the Whitefish City Council was hopeful that the board now would be interested in looking at new options. The Housing Authority board was looking into acquiring grants to supply housing for all, as the council said they needed seed money to get anything going.

30 years ago

Feb. 2, 1991

Plans to renovate Whitefish City Beach had recently been approved by the city council. Whitefish Park Board was proposing a three phase plan for City Beach and the council’s one stipulation before starting is that the board acquired all funds before beginning the renovations. Phase 1, with an estimated cost of $264,000, was to include renovating the east end of the park including new walkways, picnic shelters and a renovation to the bath house which would include a second floor snack shack.

40 years ago

Feb. 2, 1981

Whitefish had just reached 53 degrees Fahrenheit in February which was one degree more than the previous record set in 1905. The low for the week was only 25 degrees and the weatherman had said that might have been a record “high-low” for the period. An arctic front was due for the following week, however.

50 years ago

Feb. 2, 1971

The Whitefish School Board had just accepted a modified dress code which would permit girls to wear pants outfits to school, but would prohibit blue jeans, shorts and cutoffs still. For the boys the new dress code was to allow sideburns to a level on a line with their mouths, and mustaches.
