Whitefish senior swimmer Helena Kunz committed to Long Island University for swimming on Monday.

Kunz is a standout swimmer with the most success coming in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. She first tried swimming when she was seven years old, but quit shortly after. When she moved to Whitefish in the sixth grade she began swimming with her best friend who was already into the sport.

“I really love the supportive environment and just my teammates are super fun,” Kunz said about swimming. “It’s a very individual sport so I can really push myself on my own. I can just work on myself.”

Around sophomore year of high school is when Kunz really started taking swimming seriously and she made more attainable goals at that time, she says. She made the goal of wanting to swim at a Division 1 college and after signing with Long Island University she’s made that goal a reality.

Kunz chose to sign with Long Island University because she had good conversations with the coach and feels excited for a big change by moving to New York. She plans to study business beginning this fall.
