Glacier names acting superintendent

Glacier National Park will have an acting superintendent starting in January. Kate Hammond, Deputy Regional Director and Chief of Staff for the Intermountain Region of the National Park Service will take the helm of the Park until a permanent superintendent is found.

Current Superintendent Jeff Mow will retire at the end of December.

It typically takes several months to fill a superintendent post. Glacier, for many superintendents, is the last job of their careers. The last superintendent to go on to another park was Suzanne Lewis, who went from Glacier to Yellowstone in 2002.

Hammond has an impressive resume.

During her tenure with the Park Service she has spent nearly two years as acting regional director.

In her role as primary park operations manager, Hammond supervises 46 park units in the states of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico.

She started her Park Service career as a seasonal backcountry ranger at Denali National Park 30 years ago. Since then, Hammond has served in a wide range of roles in the Park Service, including park superintendent, park division chief, Denver Service Center project manager, and congressional Bevinetto Fellow.

Hammond has a bachelor’s degree in history and environmental studies from Yale University and a master’s degree in environmental management from the Yale School of Forestry.
