Bennetts takes first on mat for Bulldog Wrestling

Back on the mat for the first time this season, Whitefish sophomore Henry Bennetts placed first at the Owen Invitational in Polson last weekend.

Bennetts, competing in the 160-pound weight division, was the Bulldogs top individual wrestler and began the season 4-0. In the first place match on Saturday, he pinned Browning’s David Sharp in 5:45. Bennetts was a state qualifier last year as a freshman.

A current freshman standout wrestler Landree Aurund placed fifth in the 120 division. In the fifth-sixth place match he took down Stevensville’s Gunnar Larson by a pin in 1:50. Prior to that Aurund won his opening match before losing to Larson in the second round by a 7-5 decision. Aurund won in a consolation round to then again face Larson and this time get the pin.

Another Whitefish freshman Logan Heyne went 2-2 at the tournament. He won his opening match before losing by decision to Ryder Nollan of Bigfork. In the consolation bracket he pinned a wrestler out of Eureka before dropping one to Park’s Trae DeSaveur.

As a team the Bulldogs didn’t fare too well in Polson, coming in 17th overall. The squad is down in numbers from last season and it will be a challenge to place well as a team throughout the year.

Whitefish will compete in a triangular in Stevensville on Friday and the Superior Invitational on Saturday.
