Construction crews had started a three-month project to bring the Whitefish train depot platform and entry ramps into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The new platform would be raised eight inches to be more level with passenger train doorways.

Ron Stevens, 42, of Whitefish was preparing to swim the length of Flathead Lake. He was aiming to be only the second man to achieve the goal.

Whitefish Lake wasn’t invading downtown, but it sure looked that way when a brief thundershower dumped between 1 and 2 inches of rain on the city in about 30 minutes. A backed-up storm drain forced the temporary closure of the main intersection downtown at Second Street and Spokane Avenue as high water inundated the area.

A Canadian airline was expecting to get government approval for daily flights between Calgary and Glacier Park International airport. The Alberta Northern Airlines was lining up terminal space and ground services for the new flights at GPI.

July 29, 1971

Public comment was being sought by the Tally Lake District of the Flathead National Forest on a land exchange between the national forest and Howard Streich exchanging land on Big Mountain for river frontage land on the North Fork of the Flathead River. The exchange would bring needed river frontage on the North Fork under national forest management.
