Olympian holds annual ski scholarship contest

| September 30, 2020 1:00 AM

Olympian Maggie Voisin is offering her second annual scholarship to cover fees to join Whitefish Mountain Resort’s Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Team.

The scholarship also includes the cost of a season pass for the 2020-21 ski and snowboard season.

Voisin was born and raised in Whitefish and is an alumnus of Whitefish Mountain Resort’s Freestyle Team. She is a current member of the U.S. Freeski team, a two-time Olympian, and an X-Games Gold medalist.

“It brings me a lot of joy to offer this scholarship and help pave the way for young ski athletes,” Voisin said. “For me, skiing has always been about having fun in the mountains and being grateful for every moment I get to spend on my skis. I want to remind kids that they can achieve their wildest dreams through passion, dedication, hard work, and gratitude. And most importantly, always have fun.”

Voisin will award an athlete who, in a written essay, best portrays their passion for freestyle skiing or snowboarding, their dedication to improvement, how they will commit to hard work, as well as their appreciation to be able to participate in the sport and why it is fun.

This scholarship is unique, as traditional athletic scholarships are often based on competition results or on financial need.

Applications will be accepted through Oct. 23, with the winner announced by Maggie on October 30. If the winner has already paid to join the team and/or purchased a season pass, those costs will be refunded.

Whitefish Freestyle Inc., the nonprofit partner to the Freestyle Team, will administer Maggie’s scholarship. They also offer their own financial needs-based scholarship program. For any questions, and to receive an application, email whitefishfreestyle@yahoo.com.
