Legislative help needed to fight epidemic
Dear Montana State Legislators:
As we know, Congress is now considering an emergency appropriation, but it is also just a first step. As our country works to contain the spread of COVID-19, we need all units of government to provide ample resources needed to combat this new and deadly illness by supporting funding for diagnostics, treatment, vaccine development, outreach and education, and timely and consistent public health efforts. Even a small state appropriate can match badly needed federal funds.
We also need laws, emergency if necessary, to protect Montanans from the possibility that drug companies will engage in price-gouging behavior. Immediately, that means any vaccine, especially one developed with taxpayer dollars, must be priced in a way that ensures broad access. Even if Congress passes a law we need to ensure that retailers also don’t participate in price-gouging.
And longer-term, this epidemic is yet another example of why Congress must enact comprehensive prescription drug reform this year. Americans pay the highest drug prices in the world, yet we remain powerless to the greed of drug companies. Congress needs to hear from state legislators, governors and other governmental leaders as to the importance of these types of non-partisan reforms.
Will you call or write members of our Congressional delegation, as I have, and as appropriate act within your legislative power to fully engage the resources of the state of Montana in protecting us your constituents?
